Canon "L" lenses and the red line

I am concidering the purchase of a used 70-105 f/4 L on line. The photos provided show the lens missing the red ring usually associated with "L" lenses but the markings on the lens say it is an "L".
    What gives???

I'd advise caution: buying online requires more care than buying in person.

Things sometimes are not what they seem to be, and online makes deception easier.

Consider this example of extremely rare EF-S 18 to 55 F/3.5~5.6L Lens:

Re: Canon "L" lenses and the red line

I ended up buying the lens and it is in superb condition, except for the missing red ring. I remembered that I had one of those canon lens shaped coffee cup in the cupboard, I dug it out, removed the red ring from it and put it on my "new" lens (it was flexible enough to squeeze onto the real lens). Problem solved.

Interesting. My first thought is that you have been duped. I hope this is not the case.

Nowhere in Canon’s EF History of Lenses does such a lens exist as the: 70 to 105 f/4 L. Perhaps it was a typo in the original post?

Assuming that the ‘105mm’ is correct, you could have meant to type EF 24 to 105 f/4L IS USM – (but I am only guessing). If this is the case, it is really difficult for the red ring to be ‘missing’, because the red ring is an integral part of the lens’s outer canister: this is the case with all Canon L Series Lenses:

Perhaps there was a mix up and you actually bought the: EF24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM.This lens was released in 2014. It is NOT an L Series Lens.

There are seven other EF Series Zoom Lenses which have a telephoto end at 105mm. Two have a maximum aperture of F/4 at the wide end. All these lenses are now quite old. For reference, with release dates, they are:

    EF28-105mm f/4-5.6 USM (2002)
    EF28-105mm f/4-5.6 (2002)
    EF28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM (2000)
    EF28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 USM (1992)
    EF35-105mm f/4.5-5.6 USM (1992)
    EF35-105mm f/4.5-5.6 (1991)
    EF35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 (1987)

Would you please provide a photo of the lens that you bought and perhaps also a link to the advertisement.
