    The last of the hummingbirds

Here is the last of the hummingbirds.

For a small bird note the size of the wings. An interesting thing with these birds is their feathers refract the light somewhat when the light comes from differing angles. Others are highly reflective and the throat colour is brilliant with the right light.
Like all or most birds eyes have the usual 3 light sensors in RGB the same as us but the birds have a fourth sensor in ultra violet. There is a lot of theories on what a bird actually see as some people say the birds must have a whole range of colours in the UV band we could only guess about. We don't know and possibly never will as our eyes don't respond to UV.

My guess is there isn't another range of colour frequencies because there is only one UV sensor in the eye. To get the colour we need 3 sensors in RGB.

They are just fantastic! The closest we get here is the Eastern Spinebill. Can't quite sustain a hover like H.Birds, but still good to watch.
