    Studying

These are the first 2 photos that I have taken that I could call portraits. Portraiture is an area of photography that really interests me. A good portrait will tell a story but it is so hard to do well. Critique/comments especially welcome.

Not my specialty (not that anything is).. I like the first shot looking into the frame. The eyes make all the difference to me.

I'm no specialist either but No.1 is the pick here. You have space here in the direction he's looking
with a reasonable expression of "thought"on his face to make the image interesting where in the other
image he's just looking down expressionless at nothing. Makes me want to see what he's looking at more than
    the image
But to me the first needs a crop. But thats just my opinion.

    Re: Studying

Both are good, and if it were me, I would have tried to match the exposure on both pictures first before uploading, which would counteract any bias between them.

In fact a little extra toning on No. 1 could have even improved the image, and likewise a little exposure on No.2 could have also improved it a little.

But nicely done, nether the less.

    Cheers,
    Les.

    Re: Studying

#1 for me - both above are good critiques. I would like to see the distractions dealt with though, I find the different highlights are taking my eyes away from the main subject. Perhaps a little bit more detail on the guy's hair and face as well just to brighten them up a bit. I added a window just to have a light source (you might just leave it black). I hope you don't mind the edit.
