Camera lens issue - looking for a solution??

My camera has just started playing up a few days ago. The lens just madly moves slightly but endlessly in and out. The only way I can seem to stop it at the moment is remove the batteries. I am hoping someone might have come across this before and can suggest a solution to it?? Any help or advice would be much appreciated!!

Camera is a Canon Powershot S5 IS.

I have a video of what's happening - though it's too large a file to attach; and I can't seem to add a youtube link for it just now...

    umm no idea ; sorry

how old is it? Have you changed anything lately? Tried putting it back factory settings --- there will be something in the menu to do that

sounds like an electrical / computer drama

    I agree with Ian.

Can you reset the camera back to the default settings?

If you could remove the lens, I would have said to clean the contacts between the camera and lens, but you can't do this with this camera.

If that doesn't work, I think it might be time for a new camera.

Probably set to always autofocus with image stabilisation always on. Reset to default, or alter those settings...

Re: Camera lens issue - looking for a solution??

    No worries.

I imagine it's fairly old (I got given it second hand). I can't seem to reset it - after whirring, beeping and displaying 'Lens error, restart camera', the camera then just turns off.

Maybe it is something electrical?? In which case ... it's probably one of those cases where it's not worth repairing?? (ie with expense)

Tried your link (no joy). Is it a suggestion for an alternative camera??
