    Into the sunrise

Now if I took more care when taking the photo; like bracketing or thinking a bit more it should better than this and certainly have less noise

I was in a very much snapshot mode back then. At least I used RAW

    original raw

    edited in Vivexa

dodge and burn with a layer in pse12 and finished in lr5

    Re: show us your editing.

    editing redeye's beach photo

    Original file

two original files with a 70% multiply blending layer plus masking. Note that the image wasn't cropped until the near the end of PP

above image after editing in Viveza

the above image converted to B+W which is layered over the Viveza image and a 40% luminosity blending layer

I think I have all that about right. Now I know some are saying WTH is that all about; the same way as I said that when I first started with PS, however I had some experience with printing colour photos (mini lab) and had some knowledge of what could be done in PS.

Don't panic; you don't have to know all the stuff as it's getting (slightly) into the more advanced editing. It's more important use good light to get a good file that only needs basic editing that can be done in most free programs that came with cameras. IMO lightroom is the program to have and maybe the only program to have. # 2 would be Elements 12-13. It will do most we will ever need for good quality files

Time: not everyone has the time to do or even learn this stuff; so just learn as need to know and in most cases only the basic will be enough. Concentrate on on getting the best file possible from the scene/subject so there is less editing to do.

And I still think a book is better to get started than all the confusing you tube stuff. I'm a practical learner as I cannot read/write/type very well so I can read and watch as much as I like but until I have actually done it myself a number of times I'm totally lost and rather confused and book was easy to follow along while I did it

And honestly; some of the y/tude "experts" out there are just after the 15 minutes of fame. I started with basic books; very basic books. Peter Eastway had a wonder magazine style book for PS and I that taught me so much. We can spend so much time looking for and watching youtube that we don't have enough time to do what ever we wanted to learn

Hope that helps you not to get too worried about advanced editing. You don't have to know it

I off to find that Better Photography (eastway) mag; I had forgot about it until 15 minutes ago

Honest thoughts always appreciate. Canon G11 raw file

I have noticed silver pro brings out the noise on these small files. Yep, B+W is part of the edited file and it has not been cropped

    needed a bit more

this is the original raw file. Going to have another go at editing; hoping to have less noise this time

Not sure about this one Ian. That big ugly rock in the foreground is so dominant and holds your attention and tends to take something away from the beauty of the reflections. I recon a different angle would have produced a better result.

The editing has brought out the detail in the reflections, but made the rocks look a little overdone. (You'll just have to have another Tassie trip and do it again!)

This is up for discussion I would have thought foreground story (Rocks) mid-ground story (water reflections) background story (Cliffs) all brought into sharp focus Hyper-focal result. Would that be right.

Whatever the technical argument you've got to wonder what the subject is? I always take my first impression as a guide. As soon as I see a nice image I know straight away. I can then analyse if I want to know why I like it. In this case the rock is not attractive and does nothing to enhance the reflections and cliff detail behind. (My impression only, there's no right or wrong, only subjective views).

Thanks Greg. I agree with "subjective" Different I like the rock in the forefront. Gives me a boundary.

This will be over two posts so hold your horses.

The original Canon 5D11/24-105 raw file

bit of basic LR editing......more could have be done in LR

In PSE12 I added soft light blending layer

    Re: show us your editing.

    edited in Viveza

the Viveza file edited in Silver Pro 2

Back in PSE12 the black and white layer is place on top of the Viveza layer and luminosity blending layer added. Still to work out the best way to make the B+W for this stage

to sky has been toned down with a layer mask

The photo was taken to show the harshness of the area that would keep a few rabbits and a goat feed. I also wanted to 'line-up' the bush/tree/cloud shape

hows this grab you Greg and Pete. We may as well do this thread through PMs as no one else seems very interested in editing.

Your honest thoughts are appreciated Greg

Much more inviting image to me Ian. Before I felt the rock was blocking and demanding my attention as the focal point. Now it's not so intrusive and opens the scene to the viewer.

Probably not, because there are about 30 originals blended and layered together to produce the final result.
