    I'm counting down to the full release of On1 2018.5 -- only two more sleeps lol

    Can only hope it now works as we hoped for originally -- sort of feel it's a make or break release for On1. Pity really because it does have some really great points in its favor

    It was a foggy morning when he passed though a little while ago so we caught up out on the highway.

    All done in my new Affinity program -- the 1st black and white completed.

    Righto, haven't posted here in a bit, so let's get cracking.

    A bit of a crop, play with saturation and minor tweaks and added a bit of vignette (or a lot):

    So next I tried one of the in built B&W presets in CaptureOne:

    Definitely a bit more dramatic. Only thing bothering me when I look at it is the straggler on the left, so felt it is a good time to have a look at GIMP and see what we can do.

    I'm quite happy with the result, and can honestly say I had no dramas using GIMP. It took me maybe 15 minutes total do all that, and I am definitely not 100% on any of it. I am reasonably happy with the result, and will probably be taking it to the printer. As an aside, I tried Photoshop the other week and really can't see the appeal. I'm missing something, but perhaps GIMP has closed the gap so much since I last used PS it no longer has any appeal to me.

    Thanks for sharing; apparently there have been useful improvements made to GIMP and certainly worth a look -- general thought ; don't forget to make a donation if you keep it

    Love your tree! And the b/w. Couple of things I would consider -- crop off the top to an 8/10 --- lighten the ground/foliage; mostly to the lhs of the tree >ideally lighten the whites (and cloud) a little more than the shadows/darks -- lighten the top of the "flower" . Looks a great file to mirror somehow

    One of the better videos IMO and does not relate to only Affinity.
    Anyone new (and not so new) to photography/editing would learn one or two tricks watching this video --- finally someone has said "refine is not working here" .

    Too many little tricks and tips for me to take in with one look so I'm off to watch again and take notes

    true; I sort of gave up on him sometime ago however he does some interesting idea to consider.
    within reason, I would prefer someone with a not so good voice who knows what he demonstrating than the other way round -- I'm still to work out why some have to have loud (any) music in the background . The some goes for TV docs !

    quick little sky cheater of removing some boring blue sky to bring the clouds lower to the ground . (artist can do that so why can't we?
    Although I used Affinity Photo this can be done in most programs with layers

    Image 1] the original raw file [pana Fz300] from the back yard

    Image 2] duplicate the layer >make a wobbly selection [so it's less obvious] >soften the selection edge with "smooth" and "feathering" [under "Select"; and around 200 px of each but that will vary depending on file].

    Image 3] drag the selection [top layer] down to suit >if the two skies don't blend in well you add a layer mask to top layer >slowly brush to blend . This was the easiest I have ever done with no masking required --- that might be due to the affinity way of smoothing /feathering the selection. Blue skies can be very hard to match up!

    Image 4] all done -- looks better to me . Yeah Ok; colours a bit weird but most people on the www would never notice .

    Your additional input welcome as are your questions if not explained enough.
    If you are wonder why I took the photo -- just because the cloud is a similar shape to the tree

    I tried some reviving on an old Slide from 1974, when I first visited Hong Kong, and bought myself a couple of new Lenes.
    I was surprised that it had been shot crooked, ..... Back in those days, I was very fussy, shooting on film and all, and never wasted a frame.
    First time using a wide angle too .... 35mm.

    These days I shoot quite a lot with wide angle, and so am used to having add some perpective control on at least 50% of them.
    So the first thing that I did with this Slide was fix the perpective, ..... which made it wider. (on the short side)

    Using Camera Raw and Photoshop the Reds have increased a lot.
    But that's not surprising the first colours to fade with dyes, are the Reds and Yellows.

    And so here is the before and after, still a little dark tho.
    Maybe I could have added a little brightness.

    Hi Les, you did pretty well given the age of the slide. It's quite difficult to get a good digital copy of a slide without adding too much grain and contrast. I get some reasonable results with Kodak slides but I struggle to get good IQ with any E6 processed images.

    I lifted the shadows a whisker and just tried a slightly different crop.

    Looks good Greg. A little bit cleaner too.
    It would have been Agfachrome 50 ASA, that's what I used in those days.

    I have another shot of this scene shot with a Hasselblad, .... 3 and a half years later,
    I don't know what film that would have been, maybe Ektachrome, but it hasn't flared as well.

    Adding thin borders/stroke with an action ---- written for Affinity Photo forum/FB pages

    To save time; and because I could never remember which macro/action to use; I have made a couple of macros to add a number of different sized white + black borders to the photo. These can then be turned off/on/adjusted to suit .
    Another macro [1st screenshot] is used to add a 10px white + black stroke/line with round corners or square corners. I'm thinking of adding thinner lines to the same macro .

    About the photo -- it's a rough handheld manual focus stack of two files from this morning . If you need some details just ask
    Hope that gives you ideas. I rotate many photos if even just to see if it's a better composition -- still undecided with this one; not that it is very important.

    PS. Just a note on borders -- IMO; thin borders gives separation from the page they are being viewed on. That's why I use white and black.
    However thicker borders can be a distraction and can also restrict the actual size of the important part; the actual photo. I also believe borders can be a bit of a no no when submitting photos in some competitions .

    Wider borders can save to cost of matts when framing your photos. Again it's best to keep them simple --- the frame is really to add a separation from the wall . I could help you with that if need be [been a picture framer in another life]


    Yep; the newer versions of On1 have not been great on my computer; however it does very well for others The filing/organizing section is getting better . Affinity is more like Ps but also very different at the same time -- somewhere between Elements and big Ps. I have removed my Elements 12.
    Lr5 is still my 1st and often the last editing App.

    Started from a half hearted hand held happy snap with a Panasonic FZ300 at 800 iso after sunset --- we better not get into the computer time Much the of edit was trail error from an original idea .

    Basic edit to B+W was done in old Lr5 In Affinity Photo > added motion blur >masked blur from around the bird > dodge and burn > selective masking back to white.

    Border > merge visibility > duplicate > at grid (Ctrl + "/') > drag in top layer > add shadow + stroke (macro/action) > Added two layers for the black and a white stroke to image edge > masked to leave black over white and white over black Not sure if the toning was via spit toning or re-color with masking or a bit of both .

    Now add lots of back tracking and try again.

    Many feel (as I used to) that all editing should be a number pre-planned steps; however that's when the enjoyment becomes a job in my opinion.

    No comment on the edit Ian as you obviously like it. The only thing that bothers me a little is the composition with the bird looking out of the frame to the left and the wake chopped in half. I think a reframing to put the bird in the RH lower quarter would have balanced up better.
