don't you get confused with all these editing programs on your computer richard ? I certainly would

To the newbies following along :
IMO: you are better to have or use one program; learn to do the basic plus a bit more of that program before starting with other program ; or until you really need another program . I know many who wander between various programs and getting totally confused

Push button editing can be handy ; however you don't learn editing doing that . Learn the basics and how to see the colours and read a photo; once you have that sorted the other stuff will fall into place much easier .

It was while I looking closely at some of the more advanced newer programs that I realized just how hard and confusing it must be for total newbies ; especially if there is a new camera and photography to learn also . Best to get the camera/photography sorted 1st

Not really, they are, in my opinion, no different than using any of the filters in photoshop, except they make using many of them a lot simpler. Creating and understanding layer masks for instance, they operate in a similar way to the masking in LR, with added advantage of layers.

These programs, particularly the specialised ones I use, are no different to learning and understanding different genres in photography. If you want to experiment with different genres then sure LR and PS can get you by for the most part. It was interesting when I conducted the macro training showing how the various programs do focus stacks. Although PS did a reasonable job, it had a number of errors. You don't need to spend a fortune on some of these programs, one of them was $25, and it betters PS hands down for focus stacking, but does fall short of a few of the other programs when it comes to retouching.

hardest part is knowing when "enough" is too much or not enough or close enough -- not sure there is ever a perfectly enough though, so that makes it even harder . However the longer you look over a period time the more you see to do or undo

You would have to expect quite a difference in detail, given the size of the jpeg I worked on. Not worth spending any more time on.

This is why digital cameras have full auto, and JPG output, no need to worry about using anything else. Photography should be fun, well it is for me, and I don't enjoy spending hours editing my images. In the end, so long as the maker is happy that is what really matters. If they would like to get cc or general feedback on how to improve then post on forums like these and try and learn from it. However, if they want to know how their work really stacks up, start entering competitions, particularly international ones. Most of the time you're up against artists who are PS wizards.

Many with a camera these days believe they can become a professional overnight, but seriously some of the work I see published makes me cringe. No, I'm not a professional, or one who enters competitions, I'm just a hobbiest who has an opinion like everyone else.
    Cheers;

Besides white balance, camera metering is something many do not comprehend. Although I have two handheld light/flashmeters, I very rarely use them as IMO the cameras metering does a good enough job, particularly if you use one suitable for the genre. Fixing issues in post is fine, but it doesn't help to understand what to do/use when in the field.

Very good point. I find that continuous live view in combination with spot metering can be very helpful in getting an acceptable exposure of an image. Being able to move the spot oh so gradually across a line of dark and bright can give a good balance which you can see without having to use compensation.

In camera HDR and iZoom functions are great too which aren't available if you only shoot RAW.

I quite like the top one (original) with the more subtle lighting. Might be just me, but it seems to suit the subject.

Re: >> show us your editing.

if you want to challenge yourself / see how well you read colours and so forth then try editing the same file on 2 different programs . Took me awhile of flick back and forth to get these from LR5 and ON1 RAW; third is the original file

Still amazing the amount of difference . If you don't have two programs then do one edit now and another in a day or two or next week

good lessen on composition / file rotating too ---- something I thought about as I rushed to get the pic with the duck

another on1 before and after edit --- rotating files might be a of drama but the perfect eraser does a good job in removing the bits either side . The masking tools work well also on this one

    hula hula tree (??) --- that's what I thought when I 1st saw it in a local street .

The bricks and sky have been added in ON1 RAW --- 2nd file is the original .

Just part of the current learning curve that gets very frustrating at times

sort of feel the bricks should be lower --- just not looking quite right
wall and sky take from the ON1 extra folders

    You correction doesn't show.

I like the point of view and wouldn't mind it rotated 180 degrees either.
