It's hard to believe that when you look over this stunning view Surfers Paradise.. You forget that this region is said to be the crime capital of Australia. Bikie Gangs violence, extortion, homicide, armed robberies and major drug operations are a weekly occurrence in the central hub of the Gold Coast. It's no wonder that the tourism industry is struggling to bring holiday goers, families and couples when the large amount of violence and illegal activity is quite the norm on the Gold Coast within Surfers Paradise.Canon 5dmk2

Hi Everybody,

I was wondering if i could get peoples thoughts in the equipment that i currently have and my 'wish list'

I currently have:

- A Canon EOS 7D (I have access to) & EOS 30D body (I own)
- 17-40mm f/4 L series
- 24 - 105mm f/4 L series
- 60mm f/2.8 EF-S Macro

on my wish list I have:

- 14mm f/2.8 L II USM
- 85mm f/1.2 L II USM
- 400mm f/2.8L IS USM
- 70 - 200mm f/2.8 L IS II USM

I've found of late that my low light photography has been getting hit pretty hard with the f/4 - the majority of my photography is landscape work (which the f/4 is perfectly suited for) but I want to do some shallow DOF photography with wildllife, birds etc so I want to expand on my higher apertures so I can get faster speeds but also be able to shoot in lower natural light etc. I also like to take some low light portrait photography (dim lit rooms etc) and prefer not to rely on flash photography - rather i prefer to use the available light. Would you get rid of any of my current lenses? i think if i was going to get rid of any i'd lose the 60mm macro and probably go a larger focal length macro... any thoughts? I'm also currently looking at getting a range of Lee Filters - ND and some sunset/landscape filters etc. I currently have polarising filters along with UV filters for all of my lenses and a 3 stop ND for the 77mm lenses.

My newly purchased Zeiss 18mm lens arrived 2 days ago, I've wanted to try a wide angle lens on my 5DII for some time and decided to go for the Zeiss. Yesterday afternoon it clouded over so I rushed down to the Gladstone Botanic gardens after work to try and see if I could find some good angles and compositions in the rainforest section. I treated it as a bit of a scouting trip, I didn't take my time and use the tripod, I used high ISO and a shallow DOF and just went hunting for compositions. I've read that the hardest part of wide angle landscapes was getting the compositions right, so if I've done that OK I will go back and redo some images with a tripod, low ISO and long exposures. What do you think? Should I try something different before I try and redo any of these? New to Wide Angle stuff but I am a fan of Wide Angle landscape photography that is done in portrait orientation, trying to keep my feet out of the picture (just) but keeping the horizon in. I got the feeling I could be even lower to the ground (yes on my knees Barkly) in all of these, that will be a problem as my tripod won't go as low as I've done these.

Hi all,

My name is Rio, I've joined this forum to hopefully gain and share photography ideas and knowledge with fellow enthusiasts. I would consider myself a passionate hobbiest photographer, with a keen eye for photography. I have been lucky enough to be paid (not much, but something at least) for my efforts at a couple of kids birthday parties, and like most of us, have also done freebies for family members and friends... So in saying that, I would think my interests lie with Kids photography, family portraiture and event photography but not weddings... not just yet anyways :)

I am curious to know if there is any real possibilities for making good income from being a photographer. I suppose one would need to have strong connections and good reputation to become successful in this industry... or maybe just plain hard work to build up your skills, clientele and basically get your name out there.

Your thoughts??

Hi all,

I recently had the opportunity to photograph the event at Parramatta on Mother's Day for Mother's Day Classic fund raiser for breast cancer research. I wrote a little blog piece which goes into a bit of detail how I got to the venue and some accompanying photos. For the rest of the photos from the event - there is a link at the end of the blog article that takes you there.

Anyway I'd appreciate any feedback on here or on the actual blog would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

I've been very curious about those long exposures at night that try and make night look like day. During the recent full moon a friend and I decided to go out and give it a go for the first time at this causeway. This is a 10 minute exposure at around 8pm ...

2012_05_02-IMG_6008 by BrianS-FarCanal, on Flickr
I haven't cleaned that image up at all, you can still see a dust bunny top and centre. We had no idea what we were doing and tried 10 minutes as a guess.

That first photo seemed to go OK apart from the fisherman on the causeway switching there lights on and off, so we decided to try and concentrate on the Bruce Highway down river, we were hoping to get away from the fisherman and try and get the traffic on the bridge ... the fisherman decided to go down river for a look too during this 10 minute exposure ... you can't win sometimes.

2012_05_02-IMG_6009-Burning by BrianS-FarCanal, on Flickr
I tried a bit of burning on the trees and the underside of the bridge to try and rescue some detail.

A few nights later we wanted to give it another go from the other side of the bridge, this time the moon never came out and our images even after 25 minutes were turning out very dark with just some colour in the sky and in the traffic. I decided to try to paint the bridge and the foreground with light in a few short exposures and then try layering the images to fill them in. I'd never tried this before but after seeing some of Eric Curry's photography I thought I would try it.

2012_05_10-Bridge-attempt2 by BrianS-FarCanal, on Flickr
My mates photo turned out much nicer as he got some water in the foreground. Layering is something I need to learn more about, it seems to be quite a useful feature. Got to try and get better angles for the torch in painting the foreground too ... not to much drama with what I've done here.

Earlier on the first night we went out to an abandon shack in a swamp to try some long exposures, mine didn't work out but I did get this HDR image with a mixture of twilight and moon light, it was about 30 minutes after the sun went down. Pity the grass was so long and we had to shoot this from the outside of a fenceline, the tripod is on the roof of my car to get this. I do like the light at that time though ...
I have a long way to go to work out the best focal range and angles but I am excited about experimenting!!
