Thats an interesting shot Nick,
How did you do it. Like the colours of the wheel - do you reckon you could run on it - Now that could be fun.

Learning to tpye could be fun too "Thwe Wheel" ....

However, thank you.

I started out just enhancing the photo, to get a more even range of brightness across it. So first of all it's sort of HDR, in that I took an over exposed shot and a dark shot then used layers to try to get the best of both. That produced a reasonable result, and the colours on the wheel are pretty dense (rust) anyway.

But then I thought I would see what I could do. I was just experimenting with PSP's standard effects.

PSP has an effect called Hot Wax, whose result is indescribable. :) It darkens, and makes everything tend to be edgy and contrasty. I then adjust Hue Saturation Lightness to start to make everything stand out. Used the Master (all colours) and set it high.Basically I just kept running small amounts of Contrast, Brightness and HSL over it until I got where I got to. Sometimes I ran over selections to bring up dark bits and others I ran the whole image. I then selected everything white and placed the faintest airbrush of light blue over it. Framed.

The thing weighs about a tonne, literally. Getting going would be a problem if you tried walking on it. Then there would be instant realisation of another problem! :D I was going to use it to lay pipes, but basically it's just too unwieldy and way over what is needed. It cost me $2 at an auction, so hey.

Pretty cool result Nick, got a name for this Art?

Hey! Thanks! Really. Glad you can enjpy it.

That's only my third try at this sort of stuff, so no I don't have a name for it.

Name....I call it OTT P/P (or work around and see what you get, hopefully learning and developing a style) :) but you will have to ask Laurie McArthur. He _started_ me on it :D. I started teasing him about it a bit, but I can see a real result after I tried it.

If anyone wants to see anything changed or another angle, that's great, because I want to learn this, and eye-catching is largely what this is about.

Well, that's a ripper,dipper, Nick!

I don't know what the wheel is. An old turbine perhaps or an old traveling irrigator.

But I recognize the old pallet and the 44 drum.

Great colours and texture. More importantly, a great, tightly cropped composition. Well worth printing and framing in my view!

Chris. Thanks.

As photo purist (ex film where the DARK-room was a place of great caution), I am hesitant about this, but given that the August Comp runner-up at present is a P/P trick (AFAICS) and the guy who did it is running out front in September, people obviously like this stuff to varying degrees.

I say that not because I want to win photo comps (I have never understood them :)) but because it's nice to show people what they want and provide interest.

Thanks Laurie. Praise indeed.

I am not sure what the wheel was originally, but it came with 100 m of underground hydraulic control line on it: used to drive and control remote mining machinery.....so a _sort_ of reticulation! :)

My take on this is to take something mundane (and fact even unpleasant) and to take it to a point where it is still recognisable, but no longer just what it was. With work (and I saw your dump site shots) you can start to make a statement about the shot by exaggeration. Like manipulation of a shot almost along the lines of what a cartoonist does.

There is more skill to this than first meets the eye.

Been back this to this image several times. I really like it. Something different. Good Nick, are you going to get it printed and framed?

Cheers

WOW! This is scary. Thanks for the positive response.

I simply do not see myself as this sort of photographer/presenter.

I posted an aeroplane shot that drew similar comments and interest. It was processed and OTT. Very dramatic.

OK. Need to ponder.

My present idea is to capture a shot in nature under the most difficult conditions, because that's nature and that's the challenge.

Birds flying, bees the same. Butterflies' wings spread on a log, when they fold up at the slightest sound: a lizard running, same with any animal .

hmmm...multiple personality looms. :)

If I can take or produce a shot that affects people then I should. If I can do that with a photo, then great. If I need to OTT P/P then OK.

Phoogh!

Certainly am interesting shot, it looks like an old drum used to run off poly piping or large phone cables etc, probably once mounted to the back of a truck.
I too like messing with PS's effects.
