Howdy,

I am currently on a photo course and have decided to do 'nightscapes' as my feature... As I am still learning the whole 'photo' thing I was after some tips.

I took one lot of cars going down street (long exposure) and they were not too bad.

I also took some of a very large church that was lit up very well, but they did not turn out that good. Very yellow looking... Will post when I get my internet fixed...

I would like some ideas perhaps on settings for my next trip into Brisbane to get some more night shots.

I have a 40-150 & 14-45 lenses but tend to use the 40-150 the most.

try st. john cathedral in the city. the gothic structure is quite nice.

kangaroo point is also a nice place to visit in the evening. you can have a very nice evening photo of the city there. i tried once and the picture turned out ok.
here it is :

mt coot tha is also nice but you need heavy equipment (i.e. long zoom lens) to be able to deliver great photos. i also tried taking night photos at mt coot tha. the results were not very good. here is one of the results

hope this gives you some idea.
cheers,

Hi Eddy,

Those shots look great to me, if I can get them 1/2 as good I will be happy. I am hoping to get some tomorrow night, Mt Cootha, and maybe K'roo Point, will see how I am running for time.

As I understand it I should use a large aperture and a slower speed to catch night shots and a tripod ??

PS. I took some shots of a big lit up church in Ipswich a couple of weeks ago, did not turn out too bad, but was quite 'yellow' looking, due the lights I suspect.

i think this is true for most cases although you might want to play with the shutter and aperture to get the best results.

like to see these shots if you have those photos ready for linking..:) the yellowish cast can be fixed by adjusting the white balance in your camera or you can always use photoshop later..
cheers,
eddy.

the copyright comes from linking of the photo from free hosting site http://www.fotopic.net

i went to kangaroo point (again) last night and took another shot with longer exposure (10 seconds). the aperture is set at f/3.5. this was a mistake since you need smaller aperture (e.g. f/8) to get sharper night photo (of course with longer exposure, preferably 15-20s).

Hi Eddy,

I went to that site, do not see how you put the copyright on... I must have been standing over the top of you last night, we were up on the cliffs, photos look very similar!! :)

Hi Gus,

Thanks for the offer. Don't get into Brissy much, especially at night, but will let you know :)
