On the 21 June I shall be visiting Australia for the first time (very exciting...!), coming from Denmark, and with exclusive focus on Sydney/Melbourne-areas. Taking in consideration the weight of the luggage to bring along, I am considering leaving my tripod at home, and possibly buying a lightweight MONOPOD with head somewhere in Bangkok on the stop over in this city. My photo-gear to be brought along shall be: NIKON D200, Nikkor 18-200mm (with anti-vibration) and Sigma 10-20mm lenses, together with NIKKOR 50mm, 1,8, prime lens, mainly for indoor shootings.

Is Australia also effected by the climatic changes to be noticed this year in more European countries? In the affirmative, will it presumingly be expressed in the "winter" (in your interpretation) coming earlier or later this year....?

Anyone having some experience with monopods for travels? Would be most grateful for any hint of experience in this regard. Oeksen37+

G'day Oeksen,
Sounds to me like you have all bases covered with your lens selection. I am not sure the monopod will be of much help. The 18-200 VR would seem to negate the benefits of a monopod. If you need slower speeds, you would probably need the stability of a tripod.

Whatever you decide, I hope you have a great trip.

Drop me a line when you get here. I live in Sydney and I'd be happy to meet up so we can go around taking photos together. :)

Hi Tiberius, indeed kind of you to offer me some guidance during my (all too short) stay in Sydney, a city that I shall see for the very first time. I shall be travelling with my son on one of his business trips to Australia (Melbourne), but it would be nice to spend a few hours also with you and to have some hints on local interesting places to shoot. I take contact....Oeksen37+

Thanks a lot, David, I did apreciate your good points, and am looking very much forward to my first time visit to Aussie-Land, with arrival Sydney 21.6. Please do your best to arrange for a reasonable weather....I am given to understand that the weather by this time of the year is very changable.
Best regards, Oeksen37+
