"I went to examine a little cove, or basin, into which
the height of the surrounding hills gave expectation
of finding a run of fresh water. The entrance is little
more than wide enough for the oars of a rowing boat:
the basin, within side, is mostly dry at low water and
the borders are over-run with the tiresome mangrove:
but when the tide is in, it is one of the prettiest little
places imaginable."

Matthew Flinders' Logbook.

For the curious, this is Middle Percy Island. It's off the coast of Mackay and is a popular haven for yachties to anchor and spend a night or two.
Here's a map (http://maps.google.com.au/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=101779356843191053728.00044a04a5c0f9a200a78&ll=-20.856245,149.911194&spn=1.717026,3.47168&z=9&iwloc=00044a04a95f62dc782c8)

Unfortuntely, I didn't take my DSLR on that sailing trip (3 weeks at sea without a waterproof case - no thanks). The photo was taken with a Canon A85.

I love it! The composition is just right for me and the colours in the water really make up the photo. Well done. :)

Thank you Claire, much appreciated!
I'm glad you like the photo.

Some day I'll go back there with a real camera and get a wide-angle shot... This photo doesn't show the cove, just the inlet.
Pretty amazing place :-)

Amazing. I thought I was reading an excerpt from Robinson Crusoe until I read the byline :)

Thanks for sharing.

There is a large boulder just near the entrance to the cove that has a plaque on it. That passage is enscripted there.

It was fun to imagine the Investigator anchored off-shore as Matthew came through the passage in his landing boat.

Ah Ha...someone else who has found the secret off Mackay ! The crowds all head for the Whitsundays, but the true photo opportunities are in the 75 uninhabited islands just to the south....yes, Robinson Crusoe lives.
I have taken various cameras to sea in small boats for years, including my present Nikon D70S, and I have found them to be remarkably robust in that environment. I have a very good camera case, and it gets wedged in with the computer. Humidity is the main problem, all my friends save those little squares that come with all sorts of things, and I keep a swag of them with both the camera and the computer. I'm also obsessive about cleaning the camera (just ask my crew....).
Looking forward to more of your work.
