Before going by the end of June this year for the first time to Australia (Sydney/Melbourne) with my NIKON D200, a foreign visitor to your country has heavily suggested that I buy a so called "Tilley" hat. I would be grateful for any indication as to whether the Australians themselves very often wear such a hat or similar (at that time of the year) ....and, in the affirmative, where it may be bought in any of the two cities mentioned above. Thanks!

What on earth is a tilley hat?

Nevermind, I looked them up in google...

They'd be more likely to be worn on farms and in the outback...

When youa re in Melbourne and Sydney, wear what you'd wear in any other city.

And let me know when you get here! I'll take you around the Blue Mountains!

What he said ^^

If you want to avoid looking like a tourist, don't get one of those hats.

Well, I never knew that was a Tilley hat. I have 2, a red one and a white one. I wear them a loit up here as the sun is fierce, the white one is my surf photo hat.

Many schools have adoptesd this type of hat for the children as a compulsory part of their uniform, as skin cancer rates are high in Australia due to exposure to teh sun sans hats in the past. We are more sensible now!

This would be a good hat to purchase, as even in winter all parts fo the country can have get bright sunny days when you can burn badly. I don't think you'll look like a tourist, and anyway, we'll probably all realise you are one as soon as you speak. Get a good hat and enjoy your visit!

That is sound advise right there...even here in Tassie you can still get badly burnt even in winter. Go for practicality not looks

Don't matter what you wear as long as it's a hat.

Lol, in the 15 years that I have lived in Australia (and on this earth!) I have never heard of them being called a Tilley hat.

Yes they are quite common here in Australia, except if you want the real cowboy look then I'd go for the genuine Akubra. ;)

Have fun!

Isn't it funny that we Aussies (at least here) have never heard of a Tilley hat, yet we all knew what they were once we saw one. I don't think they are labelled here as Tilley hats. Knowing the Aussie sense of humour more likely to be called a silly hat!
