The first one does nothing for me as it is but if it were mine I'd do a close crop around the book then add some aging effects.
I like the second one :)

Camera: Canon EOS 400D
Shot in manual mode because I seem to get better photos going completely manual than I do when I do shutter or aperture priority.
Also, shot in monochrome.
I do have shots in colour but I stuffed up the angles or had camera shake.
I can't remember which lens I had on there though, I think it was my 18-55.
Flash fired.

too much info for me, mistie. :) i was just wondering what metering you used to retain detail across the less well lit area's of the frame without losing brighter highlights
