Just For Fun: Kill This Thread

For those of you who don't know, a kill thread is a game played on forums everywhere.

The object of the game is to kill the thread with your mindless banter. If the thread receives no activity for 24 hours (or is closed by any means) then the last person to post is considered the thread killer.

These types of threads go on for pages, but can be extremely fun and are an awesome way of getting to know each other.

A tip for those of you who are going to follow the thread constantly: After you read, post, then when you return to the thread you can click on the thread name and click "View first unread" and you will pick up where you left off ;)

There are lots of ongoing threads where people are having a joke with each other, this centralises it.

This section is also called the Photography CHAT section for a reason, for people to CHAT.

If you don't like the idea, report the thread. Another mod will remove it if it is no good.

Separating out off topic chat and photography chat is a very good idea.

Here's what my day is full of.

Dear Corbin,
A few weeks / month or so back I discussed with you the oven at A CERTAIN WA HOSPITAL and how it has been effectively non functional for its entire short life. I also emailed Mr BLAHBALH, with my request and concerns and have received zero response from him.
As indicated in my email to him, I have NATA coming and a broken oven which has not been functional for six months looks bad for all concerned.

I believe that I have been sufficiently patient and not having any response from the supplier brings me to the point that we are at now, where I wish to have the oven returned and another supplied. I do not wish to have it replaced with another oven from that company and request that a different brand be supplied.

I would like their full company name that you have been dealing with and I will be forwarding this information to BIG COMPANY with a recommendation that Health steer clear of this supplier and their product range.

I started a thread a while ago asking about people's hobbies, didn't get much activity.
Someone else tried to start a similar thread, not real popular. How is this going to be effective???

Just another way for people to jack up their "post count" with mindless banter. Why not just move into the Test - please ignore thread, that worked well.

When I saw the title of the thread I wanted to know what EXACTLY it was about. Obviously the title is a good indication however I had not seen a thread like this before.

After seeing what it is about I am more than entitled to comment and express my opinion.

I to enjoyed reading the random dribbles of the "Test - Please ignore" thread as there was no intention for it to take off like it did. The "photo below me" thread promoted people to try their hand and something that may be a little different to what they normally capture and was a good way to share more photos.

This is just asking people to post random cr@p with the sole intention of getting it closed down, and by a mod of all people.

Whilst I am sure Mel's intentions were for people to "get to know each other" and to promote chat amongst members the title of the thread and the basis of it are surely the wrong way to go about it.

Anyway I am off to search cyberland....

Maybe the mods should look into whether another sub forum "Off topic chat" could be made.

As for the post count, I wouldn't even care if this weren't displayed at all. Don't really see a point in displaying it.

If it is the "kill the thread" idea that is annoying people, I will just change the title to "The mindless banter thread".

The idea of there being someone who "kills" the thread is meant to be an enticement for people to keep chatting so the thread doesn't die.

I really really think there needs to be photography chat, and then just off topic chat. Lets face it, no one wants to just discuss just photography when getting to know someone.

I skipped straight to 'Reply' once I saw people complaining about how this kind of thing boosts peoples' post counts. Since when do post counts count for anything? I don't take any more advice from a 6000 count poster than I do a 5 count poster, I look at the info they are giving & decide from there. I'd actually prefer it if they stopped showing the post count like a lot of other forums are starting to do, it's ****************

Yup, that's why I'm here. But let me expand a little bit for those who think this thread should be trashed.

Here is my spin on threads of this nature and I'll use a musical example to make my point as music is a field I do have a certain level of expertise in.

I watched a doco on Bob Dylan a while back and he was discussing the music scene in Greenwich Village back in the early sixties. In those days musicians were a dime a dozen and there were clubs and bars all over the place and one could see a dozen acts or more in a night. Dylan was talking about the acts that impressed and influenced him the most. When asked how he sorted out the chaff from the hay he simply stated "It's in their eyes". No mention of their technical skill, their voice, the lyrics or whatever. For Dylan the most important criteria were passion and intensity. Obviously a certain level of musicianship was important but secondary.

I rarely listen to CDs anymore. I go out at night to watch musicians play 'cos I want to see their eyes. I want to SEE their passion, their level of intensity, their touch, their feel because this is what moves me the most. When I want to listen to music at home I watch youtube, again because I NEED to see.

Back to this thread and photography.

I don't come to this forum to look at pretty pictures.

Sure I'm interested in the tech stuff as that's how I learn, obviously, but what I REALLY want to get from this place is a feeling for YOUR passion for the art of photography because I feed of it.

If we all just post pics and throw a bit of CC around that's fine I suppose, if that's what this place does for you then that's great, that's wonderful, all power to you.

But I want more, and the only way to get it is to talk, to chat, to laugh and have some fun SO WE GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER even if it's only a little bit.

I need to know how you see the world and your pics are for me only part of the story.

I also acknowledge that we all walk different paths and have different lives and I make no judgement on anyone for their reasons for coming here, I'm just giving you my spin.

So I like threads like this.

Anyway, it's Friday night and my favourite local musos are about to start their second set so I'm outta here.

Photoshop is my life (how sad haha).. I work Mon-Fri 5pm-12am because the flagging and fixing lab work has to be done for day shift to their "thing".

Yeah, I was so busy at work I was getting home and basically crashing! Even skipped dinner a few times. Will not be doing THAT again for a while, so rest assured the beer fridge is now full again :D

Edit: I don't drink on work nights anyway, so 3 weeks sounds a long time but it wasn't really... only two weekends beer free heheh
