Hi all - recently moved to Adelaide and with the change of circumstances I had enough money to buy myself a DSLR :D I'm 15. After a hell of a lot of research, I landed a Pentax K10D with Pentax 16-45 F4 glass. Pretty happy with it so far! Except it gets a little too easily confused by dappled (shade under trees) light. Still, we all know dawn and dusk are the only times to take photos?
In case you're interested - the competition got struck off the list because -
400D - ergonomically a mess (hand cramp after a minute holding the thing, and it only weighs 700g with the (poor) kit lens! No such issue with my 450g heavier K10D + 16-45.
A100 - for a start, it's a Sony (yes, I know what the camera actually is, but it's still got Sony written on it). This means expensive EVERYTHING accessories, and no clue as to how good future lenses will be. Several other minor issues.
D40 - a class down. Competitor to K100D, not K10D. AF-S lens are (!) for the high-end zooms which I will definitely want for motorsport photography.
D80 - too expensive.
Anyway, looking forward to the 50-135mm F2.8 Pentax is launching this year :D Hope it doesn't tip 4 figures though, otherwise it's back to second hand :(

Hi there SupremeMoFo,
Welcome to the forum, I look forward to seeing some of your shots from around Adelaide. I wouldn't be too harsh on the Canon kit lens as I have seen some outstanding work done with it.

interesting intro lol
the 400 I have, and to be honest, the weight was not an issue. saying that, i have now added a battery grip and I think you would have found a major difference with that on.
read around and you will find other say the battery grip is not for them, but I tried it for a day and now its stuck to my camera. the weight and feel completely changes.
either way, you've grabbed yourself a great little camera and you seem to have a lot of enthusiasm, which is great.
Welcome and hope to see some pics soon.....

Welcome SupremeMoFo

That's why I like my 20D and 10D. I like a bit of weight and size to my cameras :)

Mmmmm Hi & welcome...
Its not the size or the weight it is how you use it...
I also have a EOS 400D Canon 75-300 zoom lens

Unfortunately not as interesting as you'd hope. There's no other MoFos on other forums I inhabit. So by default, I am kingpin MoFo.
I wouldn't be too harsh on the Canon kit lens as I have seen some outstanding work done with it.I was looking at the same quality for the Pentax F3.5-5.6. Was pointed towards a comparison between the 18-55, 16-45 and 50mm F1.4 - the 16-45 sits much closer to the 50mm prime for IQ! (at twice the cost of the 18-55) Anyway, the lens doesn't change the MoFo behind the viewfinder, but I figure it might negate the need/want for a 50mm prime (aperture aside).
the 400 I have, and to be honest, the weight was not an issue. saying that, i have now added a battery grip and I think you would have found a major difference with that on.Purely personal :) I figure if as many people had as big a problem with the shape of it as I did it wouldn't sell quite as many. It's probably something wrong with me
Its not the size or the weight it is how you use it...Oops, my only point there was just how well the 400D didn't work for me.
Is this SupremeMoFo from IGN?eeeeek! Multiple forum moderating moderator! /runs (this is how pretty well everything reads on a tech forum, except the spelling isn't as good)
Thanks for the welcomes guys!
Here's the ones I like of what I've taken so far. A comment on another forum was that they're a bit snap-shot-ish, but that's what they were, riding around on my bike looking for photos...

The only edited ones are the first 2 - the sunset silhouette shot is rotated, the sea lion shop is cropped.
Also, here's my photos from the WRC round held in Perth 3 months ago - the first album is from our old (dead) Olympus Stylus/MJU 410, the second from mum's 18 year old Canon T70. All photos taken by yours truly.
