Guess what I got for my birthday. From my parents.
Typically there's been too much wind and not enough sun to use it to full effect since and I've only got as far as the back yard but I just had to play.

Very cool....dumb question is it a filter of somekind, what is infrared :o ??

I have a Hoya R72 filter to replicate the effect of infrared film. Not everyone likes infrared pics but I always have. Traditionally it's black and white, soft in places and quite grainy. Foliage and grass come out white, the sky is black and peoples eyes go black too.
With the filter on you can't see anything through the lens so you have to compose your shot before you put the filter on. Auto focus will work through the filter but you have to shoot manual for everything else and there's no point metering. Because the filter blocks so much light it's usually a long exposure so you need a tripod and a still day unless you want fluffy foliage and you need to strongest possible sun to get the full effect.
I haven't had enough sun yet to get a good effect and it's been windy so these don't look very 'infrared'.
The filter makes everything red. So straight out of the camera you get a red photo unless you set a custom white balance first. I took a photo just of the grass with the filter on then because I know the grass should turn out white I used that to set a custom white balance but I get the same results just setting the white balance in RAW after the fact.
After setting the white balance I can then swap the red and blue channels in photoshop to get a blue sky. Some people like this type of colour infrared. Doesn't do much for me really. I prefer BW so I don't need to do anything with the white balance I can just shoot and convert but it's still fun to play with the colours.
I've got a lot more playing to do before I get a decent shot.

what a great gift! I might have to leave some similar hints around the appropriate people (prior to reading this post I thought I had all i needed).
If you feel like playing at some stage:
I have seen some good pros do colour infared by mixing (or blending) an infared and colour shot in PS - works really well on landscapes and architectural stuff.
looking foreward to seeing some more IR work

Thankyou Rebecca for answering my question..I am clueless when it comes to this type of thing so any education is excellent...cool shots though

Very cool....dumb question is it a filter of somekind, what is infrared :o ??Dunno if I'm explaining what you want to know, but it's radiation with a longer wavelength/lower frequency than the visible spectrum. It's heat energy. Red light is the lowest frequency in the visible spectrum - and lower = infra, infrared = lower frequency than red light. At the other end, you have higher = ultra, ultraviolet = shorter wavelength/higher frequency than violet (highest frequency in visible spectrum).
Please correct me if I've messed something up...
I'm with SSSchwing on this one...I like the custom white balance also, you could use this one if you wanted to convey a sense of eerieness...:D
