View Full Version : Images from Saturday's wedding

Shot a wedding on Saturday. Bit of a nightmare it was
In many different ways! Celebrant was an hour late which took an hour off photo time. So yeah that left next to no time at all! Was very very difficult. Then major problem with low light (outdoor wedding on a sunny day, I wasn't prepared to have problems, didn't realise just how good the tree cover was!) which had me struggling to keep my shutter speed up and balance it with an acceptable ISO level (already had aperture wide open).
Then with no time to adjust settings in between poses/locations/changing light I have quite a few high ISO shots that are pretty grainy (though I'm not sure this will be noticable when printed) and then a few that aren't sharp because of slow shutter speed.
So yeah I am not happy with how I performed :o Way out of my league I guess! But the bride will be happy - she had not hired a photographer and was just going to get her aunt to take a few happy snaps. I don't think she will really notice the problems with the images. She is one of those people who thinks anything that is in focus is brilliant - or sometimes even if it's not :D

I don't have a photography business, I just made the page for fun :D
(Would like to one day though :))

Had a look at your photo's I am sure they will be happy. Unless her Auntie is a seasoned wedding photographer and you pushed her aside ?
Nice story also you had to work and think fast great practice. Thanks for sharing.

Part of being a good wedding photographer is being able to think on your feet. Be prepared for anything, as usually anything will happen. Bad weather, drunk bridal party, late grooms, brides, bridal party, and the kicker, thick black smoke coming over where the ceremony was being held (Black Saturday). The point is, try and think on your feet.
The last example (fire day), we had to cut photos short due to the fires in the area, the 47 deg heat and 80kmh winds. So I turned to them all and said, right let's go to the pub, and we went to an old little Irish/English pub, and I took shots of them relaxing over a Guinness.

Thanks guys.
Yep I am happy with the finished set of images... I know the couple will be happy as they hadn't hired a photographer so I do think they are better than what they would have ended up with! :)
But jeez yep you do have to think fast, especially when you have NO time and are moving from location to location very fast (from under dark tress to full sun) and have to change a whole host of settings to get the shots you need!
mbrown - good move, moving to the pub. I'm afraid many photographers would have just called it quits and the poor couple would not have many true reminders of their wedding day.

Nice photos. I like the composition of most of the photos.
e.g. the Blacklit sun, one in from of the barn,
The PP is way too soft. Or were they OOF?
and also the inverse vignetting + processing (de-sat?) just makes the photo look a bit old?
Still a very good attempt w/o a flash and 1st wedding. I struggled and only saved the photos for my 1st wedding via post processing.

Trigger I didn't sharpen the images for web so that may be it, though I did reduce the clarity of many of the images because she said she like the soft focus look (personally I don't though!)
Although I think I did miss the focus slightly on quite a few. Was shooting with the widest aperture I could to avoid bumping the iso up too much when there wasn't much light.
I do have a flash but I don't know how to use it manually :o I usually only use it for bouncing, so when outdoors I didn't know enough how to use it without ruining the images. That is definitely something I need to learn quick smart! :)
Thanks for your comments!

If you are out doors and dont have anything to bounce off then use this
I kid you not, this works perfectly. And its adjustable by now much foil you put in.

^ Nice and professional, that lol. I kid, I kid.
I thought the photos were quite nice, LittleAlbert - Just keep at it, the first is always the most nerve-wrecking! Best way to get into it is to stop thinking about what you can screw up or ruin, and just have fun SHOOTING! Of course, check your settings, always be in the moment - But enjoy it. It's photography. It's fun.
If you do this, your photos will reflect it - Think of it this way: If your tense, the people your shooting will be tense.
So be happy, shoot happy, and have happy customers!

I'd say a big well done to you! And they should be happy with the results...way better than Auntie Kodak ;)
I love the one in front of the barn with the vivid blue sky.
(hoping I can get as good results when I do my first wedding in 6 weeks! )
